This is the centerfold fixed and cleaned up, for anybody who wants it.

There was a post just a minute ago with the original and now it's gone. It's so confusing and makes me think I was dreaming when things disappear.

Thank you for providing the date for the original poster. Always good to know these things and I can now add it to my paper copy.

Posts should not be deleted from this comm — it's supposed to be an archive!

Nice clean-up job (though it's good to have the original too, especially if there's also photoshopped versions around!) And thanks for adding the source and date.

Well I'm sorry to see this sort of response in the community. This is both a community and an archive, which is why posts shouldn't be made and deleted at someone's whim. The point of an archive is to protect posts and information, and Pros is a small enough community that there's really no need to be unkind to each other.

I am not being unkind, but i'm not being spoken to like that.

As a millennial I can say the first thing I noticed it at first sight was that LiveJournal is lacking many important tools that supposed to secure a comfortable, safe and user-friendly community... Very sad. Another thing I learned is to save everything immediately or you might miss it completely.

I'm not sure what kind of tools you can use to prevent people being disrespectful or thoughtless, that's going to happen anywhere, sadly (and yes, millenial or not, I've seen that kind of behaviour on other social media platforms as well).

The advice to save everything you might want immediately is good though, it always has been and always, sadly, will be, because people are people. That's one place lj shines, if you've turned on email notifications — if you miss out on saving a specific post, you can still see it in your notifications, albeit not at full size, but if something wasn't at full size anyway, then that doesn't make much difference.

The final thing to remember about Lj is that it was one of the earlier social media platforms, and later ones were built after seeing how it (and others) worked! Don't kick your grandma too hard! *g*

Oh, when I mentioned tools I first and foremost meant what you mentioned, aka deleted posts, and this other phenomenon that people can delete other people's comments. Tools like that, settings that could be changed to set restrictions/preferences in a community so certain unwanted behaviour could be prevented—these kind of tools what I meant. They can be big help around any community, in my experience—I just have to get used that LJ is so different and much more simple that any platform I used before.

You are right about the email notifications, it's a nice bonus, although I think the attached media in the email is an even smaller picture than what originally was posted, and I think only one picture gets included in the mail? Anyway, it's still better than nothing, especially regarding of deleted posts, and you're also right in your sidenote about the size issue.

Your grandma comment undid me 🤣! I solemnly swear I would never kick any grandma, mine or else!

Ah, got you. The thing is, if mods and ops couldn't delete other people's comments to their communities/own posts, then they wouldn't be able to delete spam messages etc. There aren't nearly as many of them now as there used to be, presumably as the technology to catch them has moved on, but they were a real problem at one time. Being able to delete them was necessary unless you wanted you comm or post to be overrun with links to porn sites etc.

I'm also reluctant to say that people shouldn't have the ability to delete their own posts - yes, it can be abused, and I hate that there are huge gaps now in Pros history on lj because some people decided to delete their own ljs (fair enough) but also ticked the box that deletes all the comments they left to other people all over lj. Because that's deleting not just your own history, but other people's history. But people are people and we all make mistakes - we need to be able to delete misjudged posts, that were made in upset or anger or drunkenness, for example!

Community mods/maintainers do have various tools that can be used to help protect their comms (e.g., I could choose to screen every post before it's made, or the posts of people I don't trust; I could (and have when bot spam was particularly heavy) set comms so that only comm members can post and/or comment etc. etc. But you've got to balance that kind of control with giving people the ability to communicate and interact as freely as possible, and that's what I try to do. I don't want tight control over what people post/comment etc., I think you have to trust people as far as possible, and only restrict things if they repeatedly show that they can't be trusted.

So that's where I'm coming from as a mod. A light touch, but a definite line. *g*

If only lj had tools to prevent the moderators from barking out orders like a military commander instead of asking nicely when being told what not to do.

That's a very specific interpretation of something that wasn't even said to you. If you hadn't jumped in seconds after my comment, which was in support of someone who said they were confused by posts that were made and then deleted, you would have received a private message from me asking you kindly not to delete posts or comments made to this comm, which is supposed to be an archive. Instead your immediate response was to do something aggressive and spiteful - delete the post yet again. There was absolutely no need for that kind of response, and I therefore decided not to interact further with you in the thread, or send my planned message. Perhaps you could have asked nicely to find out why there was a problem, if you didn't understand that.

And we had already cleared that upso there was no need to mention the deleting part. I won't be posting anything to the archive from now on so please leave me alone.

This whole conversation is about deleting posts and comments, and that is all that I am talking about here. I'm afraid I have had to stop your posting access to this archive community because I can't see any indication that you wouldn't do it again - we had not, unfortunately "cleared that up". You have also, in fact, been doing it on and off for a long time, and I have tried to be patient about it, but multiple people have noticed and asked me about it, so I'm afraid I've had to act. So you are right, you won't be able to post anything to this archive community from now on.
